'In Dialogue' - Opening Event

In Dialogue: 21 May - 4 June 2016
Space One, Seoul
서울시 용산구 신흥로 95-9 (신흥시장 내부)

I arrived in Seoul city on May 19th and made my way to Yongsan-gu. Space One is situated in the centre of an old indoor market at the top of a steep hill and in close proximity to Namsan Tower (the highest point in the city).

I am taking part in a two-person exhibition project alongside Korean artist Ho Un Bac. In Dialogue has been organised by Space One directors Showna Kim and InYoung Yeo.

At our closing event on June 4, I will show a video installation which will be the result of the work made in the space over the next 2 weeks.
The area of Yongsan-Gu. The market entrance is on the left, just beyond the blue shop front.

I found some wood and boards that could be used to organise the collections of cutouts I had brought from home. The beams had been painted by a previous resident and were helpful in moving the boards around the space...

A local business near the entrance of the old market where Space One is located

I have now positioned all my found images on these three large boards ready for the opening event. I will be using the space as a studio - creating collages that will be edited into a video piece. I will be juxtaposing British print material brought from home with the surroundings and by seeking inspiration from the local environment I intend to capture something of the city in my film.

Visitors can enter the space whilst I am working, to observe and engage from Tuesday - Friday (17:00-19:00) and Saturday 28th May (12:00-17:00). The closing event will take place on June 4 (18:00-20:00).

The view from the rooftop at Space One

For the opening event, Space One hosted a rooftop film screening of Faces of Seoul by Gina Kim.
It is a cut-up collection of documentary footage with English language narration by the artist and Korean subtitles. We watched it as the sun went down and I noted one statement (although I found it all inspiring)...

"They don't take pictures because they are happy. They are happy because they take pictures"
