Art in the Crypt
Art in the Crypt at St. Giles Church Camberwell, London SE5
In 2013, I created a series of events in the Crypt of St. Giles church and worked with artist-photographer Jessy Boon Cowler to host three group exhibitions involving artists and performers from across the country.
Alterations, 9 – 14 September 2013
This first exhibition explored construction, rearrangement, repetition, and layering. Using techniques such as assemblage, collage, projection, and digital manipulation, the participating artists adapt their source materials to create works that hold hidden layers of activity.
Jessy Boon Cowler’s photographic work uses layered projections and overt digital manipulation to create surreal reflections of the commonplace. Lesley Hilling’s work conveys a powerful sense of longing to preserve the fragments of the past, a desire for order, a passionate and mysterious evocation of lost moments. Lucy McCall’s practice is largely concerned with the physical act of making- she accepts mechanical interference and chance happenings, allowing for disruption and a progressive dilution of form. Using found images and materials from commercial sources, Ellie Geary's work uses collage to transform visual perspectives and manipulate systems of living.
